What inspired you to join Mountaintop?
“As a grassroots leader working directly with women, youth and refugees, I believe this opportunity would enhance my capacity to develop more impactful, sustainable and inclusive solutions. I am also excited about the Mountaintop Fellowship because of its strong commitment to supporting sustainable solutions that address pressing community challenges. This experience will strengthen my leadership, broaden my knowledge, and deepen my advocacy.”
Sunday Medard is a grassroots climate leader and social entrepreneur from Uganda dedicated to building resilient communities through sustainable energy and environmental stewardship. Growing up in Kyegegwa, he witnessed the devastating effects of deforestation, poverty, and limited access to clean energy on people’s health and livelihoods. These experiences fueled his commitment to community-driven solutions that restore ecosystems and improve daily life.
He is the Founder and Executive Director of The Community Empowerment Network (TCEN), a youth-led organization focused on climate action, health, and socio-economic transformation. Under his leadership, TCEN has educated more than 500 women, youth, and vulnerable community members on climate adaptation, mobilized over 2,000 people for climate advocacy campaigns, and partnered with local government to integrate sustainability into public programs. His approach emphasizes community ownership, inclusive leadership, and collaboration across stakeholders.
Sunday has also represented his work on international platforms. In 2025, he joined the International Organization for Migration’s continental program “Accelerating Youth-Led Action in Addressing Climate, Mobility, and Displacement in Africa,” where he was selected among 39 youth leaders from across the continent. He also presented TCEN’s work on air quality at the 3rd Clean Air Forum in Nairobi, expanding his influence to cross-border environmental advocacy.
He holds a Postgraduate Diploma from Uganda Management Institute (UMI) and a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and Finance, which have strengthened his capacity to combine financial management with climate action and sustainable entrepreneurship.
For his Mountaintop Fellowship, Sunday is leading the “Green Energy Initiative,” which introduces briquettes made from agricultural waste as an alternative to charcoal and firewood. This project aims to reduce deforestation, improve public health by cutting indoor air pollution, and generate income for rural households. By training families, engaging local suppliers, and building partnerships with health and agricultural stakeholders, Sunday’s initiative seeks to transform household energy practices into a driver of sustainable development.
Rooted in his Anglican faith, Sunday leads with compassion, inclusivity, and a belief in collective action. His long-term vision is to expand TCEN’s impact across Uganda and Africa, influence climate policy, and foster community-driven solutions that ensure a healthier, more sustainable future for generations to come.
