Monrovia, Liberia, August 15, 2023 – Network For Empowerment Progressive Initiatives (NEPI), a nonprofit focused on the reduction of youth crime and violence with a youth rehabilitation and cash transfer program, is delighted to announce that it will be hosting two Fellows in partnership with Mountaintop, a US-based nonprofit. As a host organization, NEPI was selected from a highly competitive candidate pool due to its demonstrated impact, innovative model, and trusted leadership.
The Mountaintop fellowship program provides Fellows with a paid, one-year, full-time service experience, enabling them to contribute to their home communities' development by working on critical challenges alongside high-impact locally-led NGOs, government agencies, and social ventures. Mountaintop amplifies Fellows’ potential for impact by providing a world class experience including mentorship, grants, a lifelong community of inspiring peers, and a two week leadership institute hosted in Cambridge, USA at Harvard University’s Edmond & Lily Safra Center for Ethics.
Klubosumo Johnson Borh, CEO of NEPI, shared more about his work: “NEPI tackles the basic needs of the most vulnerable and impoverished street youth with a proven and scalable solution; by that, we reduce youth crime and violence and transform the future one youth at a time.”
Founder and CEO Reed Shafer-Ray emphasized the organization's mission, stating: "In the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose "Mountaintop" speech called for a locally led movement to stir our global consciousness, Mountaintop cultivates transformational local leadership and strengthens communities in places worldwide where success too often means leaving and not coming back. In line with that mission, we could not be more proud to partner with NEPI as a Mountaintop Fellowship host.”
At NEPI, the Sustainable Transformation of Youth in Liberia (STYL) program seeks to provide young men with the highest risk of engaging in violence and crime with an 8-week behavior change and cash transfer intervention that bolsters their cognitive and social skills, readying them to start a business or enter the workforce and equipping them to reach their goals. With the STYL model, NEPI finds and enrolls hardcore street youth in the STYL program, provides an 8-week program with group CBT, conducts one-on-one counseling, and socially reintegrates youth.
The fellowship application is now open to support exceptional emerging leaders with a commitment to serve Monrovia and Liberia as a whole over the course of their careers. The deadline for submitting applications is September 30th, with the fellowship beginning July 13, 2024. Interested individuals can apply through Mountaintop's website at https://www.mountaintopfellows.org/fellowship.
About NEPI: Urban crime is one of the most costly and divisive issues facing cities around the world and most urban violence is committed by a small number of young men. From Liberia to Chicago, research has shown that it is possible to identify them, change their mindset and behavior, and integrate them into law-abiding society. At NEPI, we focus on the reduction of youth crime and violence to create safe communities for everyone with a CBT-based hardcore youth rehabilitation and cash transfer program.
About Mountaintop: Mountaintop is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that works toward a future where every community can solve its own problems in order to build a just, loving, and peaceful world for all. In the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose "Mountaintop" speech called for a locally led movement to stir our global consciousness, Mountaintop cultivates transformational local leadership and strengthens communities in places worldwide where success too often means leaving and not coming back.
